Serenity, the sound of water flowing, the smell of algae in the air, and the feeling of being surrounded by the people I love. The first time the jagged rock stairs come to view, one feels the intimidation that nature can be both beautiful and purposeful. Losing a beautiful place like the
Billy Goat Trail would mean a loss of senses, memories, and natural wonder in a place that is near and dear to me. Hiking the trail is like a rite of passage for Potomac natives, and losing a place like this would be like a loss of manhood.

I love the imagery you were able to use throughout. Some sentences are wordy and could be reworded, but overall I felt like I was there experiencing this! I need to check out this place sometime.

ReplyDeleteThe loss of manhood line at the end stuck a chord with me. Good segue into the introduction of the place.But as great as the last line was it seemed a bit disconnected from the rest of the entry.
ReplyDeleteI really liked your imagery and pictures, it reminded me of Friedrich's "Wanderer above the Sea of Fog" (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wanderer_above_the_Sea_of_Fog). We both wrote about nature and I think we both had some problem expressing the value culture. If I could re-write mine I would have tried to link it to the "community engagement" value (from the Place Matters handout).
